## Abstract
This paper analyzes the potential of Zakat as a mechanism for addressing modern economic inequalities, examining its historical effectiveness and proposing reforms for contemporary implementation.
## The Institution of Zakat
Zakat is one of the five pillars of Islam, a mandatory annual payment of 2.5% on accumulated wealth above a minimum threshold (nisab). It is distributed to eight categories of recipients specified in the Quran.
